HIPAA Privacy and Security
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was
passed by the United States Congress in 1996. It includes the
Administrative Simplification Section which has the objective of
reducing costs through computer automation while ensuring the
privacy and the security of health information. Under this section,
there are several rules including rules for Privacy and Security.
Organizations covered by HIPAA are health plans, clearinghouses and
healthcare providers. As well, these "covered entities" must have
written contracts with business associates who have access to
protected health information (PHI) such as application service
providers and contractors, covering the measures that must be taken
to protect the privacy and security of PHI.
HIPAA is flexible and allows organizations to determine the
appropriate level and suitable methods of security for their
particular situation. To meet the various needs of different
healthcare organizations, Station 1 offers a range of products
